Stanhope Alexander Forbes was a painter.
Forbes studied at the Lambeth School of Art (1874-76) and at the Royal Academy Schools (1876-78). He spent two years in Paris and discovered the rustic realism of Jean Francois Millet and Jules Bastien-Lepage. He returned to work in Cornwall, painting realistic scenes of rustic and fishing life in the Cornish community. He is regarded as the founding father of the Newlyn School, .
He married the artist Elizabeth Armstrong in 1889, but did not encourage her work, which had a disastrous effect on her career.
He also owned Whistler etchings.
